Don't Let Fear Steer Your Ride: Breaking Free from People-Pleasing

Don't Let Fear Steer Your Ride: Breaking Free from People-Pleasing

When gathering cattle, one of the biggest challenges is keeping the herd calm and moving in the right direction. When gathering young heifers or steers, if one gets spooked, it can send the whole herd into a frenzy, running in every direction—often right into danger. Fear has a way of spreading, and when we let the fear of what others think control us, we can easily lose our way.

The Bible warns us about this:
"The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is safe." – Proverbs 29:25

People-pleasing is a dangerous trap. Like easily startled cattle, we can end up running in circles, chasing approval, and forgetting where we’re actually supposed to be headed. But God calls us to live by faith, not by fear.

🐎 The Danger of People-Pleasing

Just as skittish cattle can run straight into danger, people-pleasing can steer us away from God’s plan. Instead of following His path, we get caught up in seeking approval, avoiding criticism, and fearing rejection.

Ways People-Pleasing Can Steer You Off Course:

  • Compromising your values to fit in.
  • Staying silent when God is prompting you to speak.
  • Overcommitting because you’re afraid to say no.
  • Hiding your faith to avoid judgment.
  • Letting others define your worth instead of finding identity in Christ.

A rider who lets the horse lead out of fear will eventually lose control. Likewise, when we let the opinions of others guide us, we’ll find ourselves drifting away from God’s purpose.

🌵 Finding Freedom: Trusting God Over Man

True freedom comes when we trust God more than we fear people. The world’s approval shifts like desert sand, but God’s truth remains steady (Isaiah 40:8). Instead of fearing what people think, we need to focus on what God says about us:

  • We are fully known and loved by Him (Galatians 1:10).
  • We are called to follow Him, not the crowd (Romans 12:2).
  • We have a purpose beyond human praise (Colossians 3:23-24).

When a good rancher trains his horses, he teaches them to trust his voice over their instincts. Likewise, God wants us to trust His direction over the opinions of others.

✍️ Action Step: Journal and Pray

Take a few minutes to write down an area where fear of others' opinions holds you back. Maybe it’s sharing your faith, setting boundaries, or stepping into something new. Ask God to help you replace fear with faith.

Final Thought: Ride With Confidence

A strong horse follows its rider, not the herd. God is your guide—don’t let fear steer you off course. Trust Him, stand firm in your faith, and ride forward with confidence. The only approval that truly matters comes from the One who created you. 🤠🐎
